Travellers jetting off from Birmingham Airport have been issued advice ahead of Storm Agnes hitting our region. A yellow warning for wind comes from the Met Office comes with the threat of the storm swooping across Coventry, Warwickshire and the wider Midlands.

A 19-hour warning is in place, from 12pm tomorrow (Wednesday, September 27) until 7am on Thursday, September 28 at 7am and it forecasts potentially 'significantly disruptive' winds. As a result of this, BirminghamLive has reported that the airport has issued advice for travellers.

BHX, which is one of the busiest airports in the country, was asked what plans have been put in place ahead of the blast of fierce weather. In a statement to BirminghamLive, a spokesperson say they were "prepared" and would roll out their usual extreme weather procedures as the West Midlands braces for potential travel chaos,

“We are prepared for these weather conditions and will be operating in line with our usual extreme weather procedures," the spokesperson said.

What is the yellow weather alert for?

The Met Office warning says that people could expect:

  • There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage
  • Longer journey times are likely, or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected. Some roads and bridges are likely to close.
  • There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life from flying debris

  • There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties; with a chance of some minor flooding of coastal roads.

The local Met Office forecast for our region predicts the strong winds tomorrow (September 27). It states: "After a settled start, winds soon picking up to leave a very windy day accompanied by some outbreaks of heavy rain through the afternoon. Maximum temperature 18 C."
