A Coventry butcher shop has been hit with a one-star hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Halal Meat Centre was found to have a number of problems during an inspection earlier this year.

Inspectors from Coventry City Council visit hundreds of businesses each year scoring them on hygiene, food handling and the management of food safety. Other factors taken into consideration are cleanliness, pest control and whether systems are in place to ensure good food hygiene is maintained.

Halal Meat Centre, on Shelton Square, sells a wide range of products, from fruit and vegetables to meat and poultry. Inspectors visited the city centre-based store on March 22, 2023.

Inspectors found that the business needed to make urgent changes to the management of food safety. Concerns were raised over the systems and checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat as well as employees' knowledge about food safety.

Improvement was found to be necessary for food handling, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage. Concerns were also raised about cleanliness, facilities and the condition of the building.

It comes after a local convenience store was handed a one-star hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency. Inspectors uncovered a number of problems with food handling, cleanliness and the management of food safety.
