A Coventry nursery has been lavished with praise just five months after an education watchdog expressed concern at its safeguarding practices. In a radical change of fortunes, ABC Nursery in Rochester Road, Earlsdon, has gone from being rated 'inadequate' by Ofsted in March to being adjudged as good by inspectors in early August.

In fact, Ofsted officials barely had a bad word to say about the nursery in their latest visit, the findings from which were published this week. And the feeling appears mutual among parents who are 'extremely happy with the service provided', the latest report said.

"They feel that the strong communication between themselves and nursery staff keeps them informed about their child's progress," the report added. "Parents comment that staff are approachable, caring and make their child's time at nursery an enjoyable experience."

The report continued: "Managers and staff work closely to provide an exciting and stimulating environment for children. They use information gathered from parents when their children first start nursery and their own observations of children's abilities to plan a wide variety of activities to support children and finely tune their learning.

"Staff introduce adult-led activities into the curriculum to build on children's next steps in learning. A wide range of resources support child-initiated learning and enable children to follow their own ideas and interests." Ofsted highlighted only two issues.

The watchdog claimed staff completed tasks children were able to carry out themselves, 'which impacts on children's independence'. The inspector also mentioned that some of the books at the nursery were 'in need of repair, to enable children to gain the most from them'.

ABC Nursery, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month, was also complemented for its safeguarding procedures, in marked contrast to the previous inspection. In March, 'a breach of a requirement' was flagged that 'destabilises an aspect of practice for addressing children's safety and well-being.'
