A popular Coventry takeaway has been hit with a one-star hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Indian Empress was found to have a number of problems during an inspection in August.

Inspectors from Coventry City Council visit hundreds of businesses each year scoring them on hygiene, food handling and the management of food safety. Other factors taken into consideration are cleanliness, pest control and whether systems are in place to ensure good food hygiene is maintained.

Indian Empress, on Binley Road, serves a variety of food, from 'Samosas' and 'Pakoras' to 'Chicken Tikka Masala' and 'Lamb Marricha.' Inspectors visited the city-based eatery on August 1, 2023.

Inspectors found that the business needed to make urgent changes to the management of food safety. Concerns were also raised over the systems and checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat as well as employees' knowledge about food safety.

Improvement was found to be necessary for hygienic food handling, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage, said Coventry City Council. Concerns were also raised about cleanliness, facilities and the condition of the building.
