Years ago being vegetarian and trying to eat in a restaurant could be a huge challenge. But now, thanks to the growing number of people who are embracing a meat-free lifestyle for health or environmental reasons, vegetarian food is firmly on the menu.
Today, October 1, marks World Vegetarian Day as the start October as Vegetarian Awareness Month. And whether you’re eating out or in, meat-free food doesn’t have to mean mushroom risotto and little else. From salads to cauliflower steak, delicious curries, pies, noodles and Sunday dinners, creative chefs mean it’s never been easier to enjoy a vegetarian diet.
To celebrate the day, we’ve taken a look at the restaurants in and around Coventry ranked the best for vegetarians on Tripadvisor.
Hayashi Restaurant
In 10th place, this sushi restaurant in Leamington promises a low-key dining environment serving Japanese classics like bento boxes. With five stars out of 160 reviews customers rave about the ramen, avocado temaki and gyoza.
Falafel Corner
A popular spot in Coventry for many, whether they eat meat or not, reviewers say this Middle Eastern eatery services ‘the best falafel I have ever had’. With five stars out of 225 reviews, this comes in ninth place.
The Millpool
Taking eighth spot is a pub serving British classics. Vegetarian options include a cumin, butternut squash and lentil Wellington, Halloumi gyros and a mushroom, leek and stilton linguine.
Hummus House UK
Another win for Middle Eastern cuisine, this Hertford Street eatery comes in seventh place with five stars out of 287 reviews. Reviewers say the food is filling, tasty and healthy, while the falafel is ‘seriously good’.
Earlsdon Supper Club
With a menu ranging across Europe with a focus on Italian and Mediterranean food, this is a dining experience with a difference. It’s currently got five stars out of 157 reviews with reviewers lauding the ‘sensational food’, ‘incredible host’ and ‘great atmosphere’.
Charisma Tapas and Wine Bar
Kicking off the top five is another entry from Leamington Spa. With five stars out of more than 500 reviews the restaurant promises ‘the best the Mediterranean has to offer’. Reviewers say it ‘really feels like you’re on your holidays’.
Turmeric Gold
No list of top vegetarian restaurants would be complete without Indian cuisine and Turmeric Gold in Spon Street is flying the flag here. With 4.5 stars out of almost 4,000 reviews it’s a popular spot with reviewers saying it’s the ‘best curry I have had for years’.
The Old Crown
Now down to the top three, The Old Crown is another spot proving that British food doesn’t have to mean meat and two veg. A Travellers’ Choice Award winner, customers say the pub offers filling, home-cooked meals with fabulous and friendly staff.
Kayal
Another Leamington restaurant, customers say anyone in the area ‘needs to visit’. Another Travellers’ Choice Award winner, this eatery has 4.5 stars out of 1,440 reviews.
Taste Vietnam
A Coventry favourite, Taste Vietnam in Spon Street is hugely popular. With vegetarian offerings including tofu curry, vegetable pho, lemongrass tofu baguette, spring rolls and fried rice, this restaurant offers a fragrant and authentic Vietnamese foodie experience. It’s got five stars out of almost 900 reviews and takes the top spot for Coventry’s vegetarian restaurants, as well as coming in fifth place out of all restaurants in Coventry.
