Plans for a new drive-thru restaurant in Coventry have been met with disappointment from many of our readers. The green light has been given for the new eatery to be built on the now disused Rowley's Green working men's club, just off the A444, opposite the Coventry Building Society arena.

The development will be a "significant economic benefit", according to those behind the scheme. They say the eatery, which would also have a takeaway on the development, will also "improve the appearance of the site".

There is sadness at the demise of the old club. And there are concerns about whether a drive-thru and takeaway is what the area needs.

The empty club building at Burbages Lane has been subject to vandalism and fly-tipping. Earlier this year, there was an arson attack, leading to a safety warning from police to youngsters in the city.

Plans to flatten the site got approval last week. That came nearly three years after the application went in.

Yet the news has split opinions among CoventryLive readers on our website and Facebook page. While it is not yet known who will run the eatery, some are already predicting who could be making an appearance in the area with a degree of cynicism.

Many are not relishing the prospect of an eatery in a location which they say already has places to eat. And there were questions about whether it should be used for something else.

Reader Foglightfreddy said on our website: "How ridiculous! Create more traffic at an already overloaded spot. This land should be used to provide a filter lane onto the A444 for M6 bound traffic from Windinghouse Lane."

Fellow site reader greenercov said: "Why can’t they just knock it down and plant some bushes etc? There’s enough fast food places around Holbrooks. Failing that, build a pub since they knocked down the old Bantam pub which wasn’t far away."

Iain MacGranthin posted: "Let them eat burgers. There's already a Burger King at the park. It's telling that a fast food outlet is needed more than a working men's club or any other socially functional project." Phillip Scolari Johnson said: "Is it a Greggs....we just don't have enough."

It should be stressed that no names are known at this stage. But it has not stopped people guessing.

Sue Duffy guessed: "McDonald’s wins eventually." Alan Smith also made the same prediction: "New McDonald’s."

They were not alone - Jim Gardner said: "Yes, excellent place for a McDonald’s, especially on match days." But Chris Nadin said: Fingers crossed Chaiiwala pick it up for their second UK drive thru."

Craig Jones was one person who just wants to see a return to the old times. He said: "Wish it was still a pub."

The disused Rowleys Green Working Mens Club is set to become a drive-thru - but the plans have split opinions

There are also others who live in the area who claim that they have not been made aware of the plans. And others questioned what happened to the old business.

Mark Fletcher said: "How that closed at a time when both City and Wasps were there beggars belief. Should've been doing a roaring trade."

Matty Elston posted: "Yes exactly what Cov needs - another drive-thru junk food shop."

Adrian McNally replied: "A business that’s going to generate jobs vs an empty building." That debate will go on - but there are echoes of it in the recent debate about whether a plan for a new phone shop in Coventry is what the city centre needs.

It is not yet known when the demolition will take place, nor which firm will run the drive-thru. But it is known that the new venture is set to bring 40 new jobs.
