A gang are reported to have smashed an ATM before 'lighting a fire' at Tesco Express in Kenilworth. It happened in the early hours of Saturday, September 30.

A number of suspects are said to have 'forced entry' into Tesco on Leyes Lane. A spokesman for Kenilworth Neighbourhood Watch said that as the group were breaking in they were challenged by members of the public, who were then reportedly threatened.

According to Kenilworth Neighbourhood Watch, the group tried to access an ATM, before 'lighting a fire' inside the building at around 3.45am. Cops from Kenilworth and Warwick Rural Police said the incident is being treated as arson and aggravated burglary.

Tesco confirmed to CoventryLive that the store, which had recently undergone a huge refurbishment, remains closed with a police cordon erected on Leyes Lane. Nearby 'The Bakers Dozen' is also expected to remain closed throughout the day (Saturday, September 30).

A spokesman for Tesco said: “Our Kenilworth Leyes Lane Express is closed following a fire overnight. We are sorry for any inconvenience this will cause for our customers and we will be working to re-open the store as soon as possible.”

A spokesman for Warwickshire Police said: “We were called at 3.42am on Saturday, September 30 to a report of an attempted burglary at a business premises on Leyes Lane, Kenilworth. A fire was subsequently reported inside of the building.

“A number of enquiries are currently ongoing. If anyone witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area or has any dashcam or doorbell footage, please call 101 or report online at warwickshire.police.uk/ro quoting incident number 58 of September 30, 2023.”
