A section of the M6 heading towards Coventry was closed following a single-vehicle crash that caused congestion and three-mile queues. The northbound carriageway was shut at Junction 1, for Rugby, following the collision shortly after 10.30am.

The driver involved veered out of the middle lane and into the central reservation after suffering a medical episode at the wheel. He was taken to George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton for minor injuries.

A National Highways spokesperson had said: "Traffic is stopped on the #M6 northbound within J1 near #Rugby due to a collision. Emergency services are on scene. There are currently delays of 20 minutes and approximately three miles of congestion."

Driver suffered 'medical incident'

The driver who crashed into the central reservation had suffered a 'medical incident', West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

The driver inadvertently veered from the middle lane into the fast lane before crashing into the barrier close to Junction 1, for Rugby, on the northbound carriageway shortly after 10.30am. No other vehicles were involved.

The road was closed temporarily closed to all traffic, causing lengthy tailbacks, while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

All lanes reopened

All lanes have now reopened, but it could take a while before the congestion clears.

Google traffic maps still show very slow-moving traffic around the junction with the M1 in Leicestershire.

Central reservation smash

One car was understood to have been involved in the crash, hitting the central reservation.

No one was undestood to have been seriously injured.

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson said: "At just after 10am this morning, a road traffic collision took place in the third lane of the M6 Northbound between Junction 1 and 2.

"One car is reported to have collided with the central reservation, after moving from the second to the third lane.

"No life-threatening or life-changing injuries are reported at this time. The incident left debris on the road, and led to a closure of lanes 2 and 3."

'Car involved' in smash

According to traffic information portal Inrix at least one car was involved in the crash.

The website's latest post on the crash says: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, a car involved on M6 Northbound at J1 A426 (Rugby / Lutterworth)."
