Nuneaton Borough has axed its academy as it cannot fund the aspiring team.

The 'Boro announced that with a "great deal of regret" it has had to disband its academy.

In a statement posted on its website, the troubled club said that they have worked to find the current scholars a new facility to continue their studies and training.

"It is with a great deal of regret that Nuneaton Borough Football Club have had to withdraw our Academy from competition for this season," the statement reads.

"With such a small number of scholars, as well as two season-ending injuries, it was becoming increasingly difficult to field a team.

"It has also become clear that we would be unable to fund the Academy for the remainder of the year due to the current uncertainty surrounding the club.

"We thank Andy Turner, Luke Brooks, David Faulkner and the Academy staff for their efforts in helping us get as far as we did this season as well as the scholars that stayed with us.

"We have worked with the education provider to help all of the scholars find a suitable facility to continue their studies as well as somewhere to further their footballing development."

Nuneaton Borough's Academy made national newspaper headlines earlier this month - albeit of the unwanted variety.

Action from Nuneaton Borough's FA Youth Cup match with Bustlehome in September

Boro reached the second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup after defeating Hednesford Town (6-2) and Bustleholme (0-2).

The young Boro boys looked set for a place in the third qualifying round when they built a 7-2 lead over Halesowen Town in front of their own supporters.

However, with 28 minutes remaining, the visitors managed to turn the game around to sensationally win 9-8 and knock Boro out of the competition in front of 83 people at Liberty Way.

The loss of the academy signals another blow to the already struggling club.

The club has been forced to axe its Academy team.

Only at the weekend it was revealed that the first team players had to make their own way to Stockport to play in the National Vanarama League North game.

Manager Nicky Eaden posted in a tweet on Twitter that the team not only had to use their own transport to the game - but also face the prospect of not being paid at the end of the month.

The 'Boro drew 2-2 and will now play Altrinham FC tomorrow night (Tuesday, October 30).

This is despite former directors Ian Neale and Lee Thorn pledging to write-off almost half a million pound in debt to help secure the future of the club.

The pair said they would waive the rights to directors' loans in a bid to help make the club a more attractive prospect for potential owners.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm and entrance is priced at £13 for adults, £10 concessions, with 12 to 16-year-olds priced at £5 and under 12's are £1.
