A Nuneaton school has been forced to close today over gas safety concerns after an incident last night. Middlemarch School pupils have been told to stay away today (September 8).

It follows a car accident that caused damage to the school site, as well as a gas leak. For the safety of pupils and staff, the College Street-based school has shut its doors so that repairs can be made.

CoventryLive has seen a message sent to parents last night (September 7), which read: "Due to a car accident that has caused damage to the school site and a gas leak, school will be closed tomorrow. This will hopefully give services tomorrow and the weekend to repair our gas supply and pipes as well as making our school site safe."

It went on to say that the emergency services were 'amazing' and that no one was injured. Police were forced to close part of College Street for just over three hours following the incident, which was reported at 5.15pm.

Firefighters were called to the scene due to reports of a smell of gas following a collision involving a car on the school site. The vehicle is understood to have collided with a gas unit.

The road remained closed until just after 8.30pm while the area was made safe.
