With autumn firmly here and colder weather setting in, rodents can become an increasing problem in homes and sheds as mice and rats take shelter from the chill.

The cost of effective pest control to remove unwanted guests once they're in can soon mount up, especially if you want to avoid using harmful chemicals around children and pets, so shoppers are turning to an all-natural deterrent to stop the problem before it starts.

Amazon customers have been heaping praise on one of the site's best-selling rodent repellent sprays, with reviewers describing it as a 'game-changer' and one even declaring it to be 'better than my cat.'

AMZ Brand's Premium Mouse Repellent Spray normally costs £21.99 for a bottle on Amazon but has been reduced down to £16.99. What's more, until October 20, shoppers can add an additional 5% discount at the checkout taking it down to an even more budget-friendly price of £16.15. It also comes with a free fly trap.

The spray is made from completely natural ingredients, making it non-toxic for other animals and children and more humane and environmentally friendly than many other alternatives. The spray combines castor oil and peppermint oil, which has an asphyxiating effect on rodents like rats and mice.

The ingredients have been used for decades for repelling rodents, and the manufacturers say it will see of the pests in just 1-2 weeks without causing any harm - though many of the reviewers who've bought the product from Amazon report seeing results within hours.

With it being natural, the spray can also be used on electrical cables and under car bonnets to ensure no unwanted visitors take refuge there potentially causing lots of damage, although you need to make sure you do not close the doors and windows so the mice and rats are able to escape.

AMZ also suggest spraying paper or cloth with the solution and stuffing it into gaps you think might be tempting to mice in the cold weather to keep them away.

The AMZ spray is one of the top-rated on Amazon, and has more than 1,600 reviews and a 4.5 out of 5 rating.

One five-star reviewer said: "Found evidence of mice throughout the house, so immediately went online to find a non toxic and cruelty free product that would actually work. After reading the reviews for Mouse and Rat repellent spray I decided to give it a try. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if it would work but was hopeful.

"I sprayed the repellent around the places I found evidence of mice as well as windows, under fridge etc. I’m happy to say that I’ve had no mouse activity since spraying the product. None! Also, my dog hasn’t been bothered by the spray either, he usually sneezes with strong smells."

Another added: "We've had an issue with the odd rat visiting our loft. We've set traps but they don't go for them so we thought we'd give the spray a go as a deterrent whilst we figure out how they're getting in. We sprayed it in patches in the loft area and more on a cloth which we have left in there. Literally no sign of any since.

"I was expecting it to smell really strong but was surprised at how mild it is. We think we've found the entrance into the house now so are getting that fixed but in the interim this seems to have kept them at bay."

While many reviewers say positive things about the spray, there are other humane ways to deal with unwanted pests as the weather cools. Many shoppers use it alongside ultrasonic pest repellers, which emit inaudible signals to not just mice and rats but also spiders, mosquitoes and other visitors while remaining harmless to pets and humans. Amazon has reduced this pack of four by 37% to £18.99, while Robert Dyas sells a battery operated version for areas where you may not have plug sockets near by.
