Warwick University bosses have been forced to close a building amid crumbling concrete fears. It says that, as a 'precaution', it has closed a single storey Humanities block while further tests are carried out.

It follows a survey which found that Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated concrete (RAAC) has been found in three buildings. The humanities block is the only one to have been closed.

The two other buildings - Butterworth Hall and part of the Science Block D Engineering Hall - remain open as the Uni has said that they pose no 'immediate risk.' It is unclear how long the humanities block will remain closed and a spokesman for the university has apologised for any inconvenience this will cause.

In a full statement, a University of Warwick spokesman said: “Following a detailed survey of more than 500 buildings to assess the presence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) on campus, we can confirm that very little RAAC has been found in any of our buildings. However, RAAC has been identified in three buildings with public access.

"As a precaution, one of these – the single storey Humanities block – has been closed while further tests are carried out. The other two buildings - Butterworth Hall and part of the Science Block D Engineering Hall - will remain open. Neither are considered to pose any immediate risk and their roofs have been assessed to be in good condition.

"They will both be subject to regular reviews and inspections, with mitigation measures also being put in place in these buildings."

It concluded: "We’re sorry for the disruption this will cause to a small number of people and thank our community for their understanding and support.” So far, no schools in Coventry have been found to have RAAC in their buildings.

But in neighbouring Warwickshire there have been three confirmed with the substance, which was heavily used in construction in the mid 1950s to the 1980s.
