An urgent review is to be undertaken of Nuneaton and Bedworth council homes to check for crumbling concrete. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council is to carry out urgent Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) surveys as well as carrying out remaining stock condition surveys within its housing stock.

It follows an instruction to all landlords to investigate all their properties in the light of crumbling concrete issues that have arisen across the country. The council has hundreds of properties across the two towns.

A report to the chief executive explained: "Following the letter sent by the Regulator of Social Housing on September 7 in relation to Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) whereby instruction to all landlords was explicitly given to investigate all their properties to ensure that they have a good understanding of their homes, the council must carry out suitable intrusive investigation in order to fulfil this instruction."

It went on: "Tenant safety is the utmost priority. The remaining housing stock condition surveys left to complete will allow the council to understand where their finite budgets are best focused on to help to deliver a greater effective and efficient service."

A contract has been rubber-stamped for the work to take place. The council report explained the importance of the survey works taking place.

"The danger of not carrying out these surveys, in particular the RAAC surveys, will have far-reaching consequences for the council for not carrying out their obligations as a landlord," the report stated. "They will also be heavily scrutinised by the regulator."

Warwickshire County Council, which is responsible for schools, revealed that three schools in the county were found to have buildings with RAAC. Two of them are in the south of the county, with one in the north - Outwoods Primary School. The county council has been working with the school to carry out mitigation works to the affected buildings.
