A Coventry man has been spared jail after he 'assaulted and threatened his wife and racially abused her daughter from a previous relationship.' Leslie Matthews appeared at Coventry Magistrates' Court on August 9.

Matthews, 71, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated common assault by beating at Coventry Magistrates' Court. He was sentenced to a 12-month community order to include 240 hours of unpaid work which had been increased by 40 to 'reflect the hate crime.'

He was also ordered not to contact the victim except through solicitors in relation to family law matters, says the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). Matthews was also told that he must not visit the road where she lived.

Matthews was also ordered to pay the victim compensation of £200. He was also made subject to a two-year restraining order, according to the CPS.
