A Coventry coffee shop has been hit with a one-star hygiene rating from the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Kurdish Coffee Shop in Hillfields was found to have a number of problems during an inspection in June.

Inspectors from Coventry City Council visit hundreds of businesses each year scoring them on hygiene, food handling and the management of food safety. Other factors taken into consideration are cleanliness, pest control and whether systems are in place to ensure good food hygiene is maintained.

Kurdish Coffee Shop, on King William Street, serves a variety of food, including 'Lamb Koozee' and 'Chicken Liver Wraps.' Inspectors visited the city-based eatery on June 20, 2023.

Inspectors found that the business needed to make urgent changes to the management of food safety. Concerns were also raised over the systems and checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, as well as employees' knowledge about food safety.

Staff were, however, said to handle food 'hygienically.' Cleanliness was also deemed adequate, although some improvements could be made, said Coventry City Council.

A number of other city-based establishments have been hit with one-star hygiene ratings so far this year, including Indian Empress, Angelito Café and Tapas Bar and Halal Meat Centre on Shelton Square. Inspectors found several problems at each establishment ranging from 'employees' knowledge about food safety' to 'food handling.'
